![]() We’re not talking about the most aggressive color upgrade the 4K Blu-ray world has given us, but it still leaves the HD Blu-ray looking muted and flat by comparison. The film's jungle settings, meanwhile, look more richly, lushly green thanks to the 4K version’s color upgrade, and skin tones have more highlights and tonal subtleties. Especially as the relatively predictable enhancements to the brightest parts of the image are joined by some conspicuously deep black levels, even by 4K Blu-ray standards. ![]() There’s much more life-like intensity to the bright skies of the film’s many sun-drenched exteriors, and a far greater light range between the picture’s brightest and darkest areas. The addition of HDR and, to a lesser degree, wide color technologies also gives the 4K Blu-ray image a significant boost. All the usual 4K 'Good Stuff.' And as I noted earlier, there’s practically no grain to stand between you and all this lovely extra detail. There’s more pore detail, more texture in clothing, and a generally enhanced sense of depth and solidity. There’s a definite increase in apparent resolution compared with the HD Blu-ray, especially during close-up shots. I'll come back to this at the end of the picture section of the review. This is especially true if you have a TV able to play the Dolby Vision master handily provided alongside the standard HDR10 one (click this link for an explanation of the different HDR formats). It's behind you! Photo: Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, Columbia Pictures/Sony As 2K to 4K conversions go, though, the Jumanji reboot is rather nice. Certainly its pretty much grain-free image characteristics don’t suggest that Sony has scanned a 4K image of a 35mm print (as it tends to do with back catalogue titles). ![]() ![]() This 2K master seems to be the source for the 4K Blu-ray release of the film. Disappointing given Sony’s oft-hyped dedication to the 4K cause. Having been shot for the most part at a resolution of 3.4K, Welcome To The Jungle was only given a 2K Digital Intermediate for its cinematic release.
